Your ₹10 lakh Mudra loan is approved! Just pay ₹6,550 to receive the money.
Sounds like good news, right?
But what if the loan doesn’t exist?
Fraudsters are misusing the name of Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) to trick people into paying fake processing fees and sharing sensitive banking information.
The Mudra loan scheme is genuine, but the offers circulating through suspicious WhatsApp messages, calls, and fake approval letters may not be.
Real Mudra Loan Scam Cases in 2026
In June 2026, PIB Fact Check exposed a fake approval letter claiming that a ₹10 lakh Mudra loan had been sanctioned in exchange for a ₹6,550 processing fee.
Another warning in September 2026 involved a forged ₹20 lakh loan approval letter demanding agreement charges.
These incidents highlight how scammers use official-looking documents to make fraudulent offers appear legitimate.
How Does the Mudra Loan Scam Work?
The fraud often follows a simple pattern:
- The attractive offer: You receive a message promising an easy Mudra loan with quick approval.
- The fake document: Scammers send an approval letter featuring government-style logos, stamps, and signatures.
- The payment demand: You’re asked to pay processing, insurance, or agreement charges before receiving the loan.
- The deception: After collecting the payment, scammers may demand more money or stop responding.
This is a classic example of social engineering, where criminals exploit trust, urgency, and financial needs to manipulate victims.
5 Warning Signs of a Fake Mudra Loan
Watch out for these red flags:
- 🚩 Guaranteed loan approval without proper verification.
- 🚩 Unexpected approval messages on WhatsApp or SMS.
- 🚩 Requests to send advance fees to personal UPI IDs or unknown accounts.
- 🚩 Fake government-looking documents and suspicious website links.
- 🚩 Pressure to pay immediately or share OTPs and banking details.
Important: Genuine lenders may charge applicable fees. Always verify charges directly with the lending institution before paying.
Is the Mudra Loan Scheme Genuine?
Yes. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana is a legitimate Government of India scheme that supports eligible small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Loans are provided through participating banks and other eligible financial institutions, not directly by MUDRA.
| Loan Category | Maximum Loan Amount |
| Shishu | ₹50,000 |
| Kishore | ₹5 lakh |
| Tarun | ₹10 lakh |
| Tarun Plus | ₹20 lakh (subject to additional eligibility conditions) |
An approval letter is not proof of a genuine loan. Always confirm the loan details independently with the lender.
What Should You Do If You’ve Been Scammed?
If you’ve already paid a fraudster:
- Contact your bank immediately and report the suspicious transaction.
- Call 1930, India’s financial cybercrime reporting helpline.
- File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Preserve evidence, including screenshots, payment records, phone numbers, and approval letters.
Quick reporting may improve the chances of recovering funds, although recovery is not guaranteed.
Final Thoughts: Verify Before You Pay
A fake approval letter, an attractive loan amount, and a small processing fee can be enough to convince someone to transfer money.
But remember:
A government logo doesn’t prove authenticity. A loan approval message doesn’t guarantee a loan.
Always verify before making payments or sharing sensitive information.
